Am I at the Grammys or at Church?

I watched the Grammys this past Sunday and was amazed at how bad it was. As an intense follower of web trends, I love how small companies can take the most minute problem on a major site and create an entire new business by solving that one problem. Well, the Grammys need a MAJOR overhaul. Call it Grammys 2.0 if you have to. Just do something!

Let’s review. For some reason, the Grammys love to bring back old people into the mix. Don’t get me wrong. I appreciate celebrating the history of music. But why do I need to see Tina Turner perform for the 20th time. I think she has some sort of contract with the music industry that says she must perform every year she can fit into a tight tinfoil-like outfit.

Some performances were good. Kanye was good. Foo Fighters were good. Alicia was good. But almost everyone else was just some old timer singing their old songs. I’m just tired of it.

The worst, however, was the disturbing scene that was Aretha Franklin’s performance. This woman’s voice is amazing. But that doesn’t excuse the fact that this is not church. I’m not Christian, and while I don’t mind a Jesus or two being thrown around in the lyrics, I do mind a humongous lit-up cross with a church choir singing amen in the background. What if we had a bunch of Muslims singing praise Allah? How would people feel then? I just think it crosses a line. Not the ‘religion’ line. It’s the ‘taste’ line. The church music is SO tacky. It might be inspirational for some but for most of us it makes us think of those Christian rock compilation commercials where stadiums of swaying followers have their hands up in the air. I respect it. I’m religious myself. But I don’t think the world needs to see it quite like we did at the Grammys on Sunday.

Next year I’m hoping to see Grammys 2.0. Users vote who performs and get a YouTube Q&A with the head of the RIAA. Now that would be entertaining.
